The word “salt” is used some nine times in the New Testament. Eight of those nine are in a positive sense and seven of those nine are used by the Lord, Himself. I thought what brother Petrillo had to say here was very good concerning the need of Christians to be “salty” in our service to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
ARE YOU SALTY?
Brett Petrillo
While this may sound nerdy, sodium is actually a very interesting element. It is an element that isn't good for much by itself, so links itself to other elements. Depending on what it joins with determines what it is good for. It can become baking soda, borax, and many other things. The most well known combination is table salt (Sodium and Chloride).
Matthew 5:13 says, "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men."
Jesus wants Christians to be the salt of the earth, but how are we supposed to do this? Just like sodium, the only way we can change is by joining with something else. In this case we must join ourselves with God's word. When this happens, changes will begin taking place. We will become more kind, moral, and ethical. We will have a sense of joy and hope. We will want to share this great feeling and the good news about God with others. This is the kind of "salty person" Jesus wanted us to be!
The question is, do we live our lives joined with God's word? Does it produce changes in us? Does it make us excited and more evangelistic? If not, then obviously there are other elements mixed in that are keeping us from being the "salt" Jesus called for us to be. Let's remove the impurities in our lives and make sure we have the right mixture of God's word in our lives.

So, the question is, how hard are we all working to be that “salt of the earth” the Lord would have us to be? And, this applies to us both, individually and collectively as a congregation. What is the biggest thing, greatest thing others know about your life? Is it your job, your hobbies, your family or, your devotion to God and His Son? If someone were to ask your best friend or some of your co-workers about the most important thing in your life, what would they tell them? Now, these things all have an important place in our lives, especially our physical family but, God and His Son must come first! This is the real beginning of us being the salt to the world we need to be!
Until next week, I love you all,
Dan
